Huddles are Hope Fellowship’s version of “small groups” or “community groups.” These are small, gender-specific groups of 3 or 4 people who meet regularly to provide a structure for us to care deeply for one another and to foster growth as disciples of Jesus. These groups are designed to help us discover Jesus in the scriptures, nurture the truths of the gospel, and faithfully act on what the Holy Spirit calls us to do. The goal is not to JUST hang out or have fun or build friendships, though hopefully that happens too!
HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET AND HOW LONG?
Ideally a Huddle will meet weekly. You should plan to meet at least 90 minutes each time.
WHERE WILL HUDDLES MEET?
The best venue for a Huddle is in someone’s home, or somewhere which provides privacy and quiet. Members need to have an atmosphere where they can share openly with the freedom to be vulnerable and open without being overheard.
WHAT DOES A HUDDLE CONSIST OF?
The “meat” of the Huddle is the Discovery Bible Study, which is a transformative way to study the Bible. Based on the scripture reading, we share personal stories and struggles, ask questions, listen to each other, pray, speak the truth in love, repent, confess, listen to the Holy Spirit, and submit to one another. Beyond the weekly meeting, however, Huddles should seek to build trusting relationships by sharing everyday life together.
WHAT IS DISCOVERY BIBLE STUDY?
Each group will choose a book of the Bible to study through, usually focusing on one chapter a week. The members meditate on the Scripture between meetings, answering four questions about the passage:
What is the Context?
Who is God, and what is he doing in this passage?
What is God doing in me through this passage?
What does God want to do through me in this passage?
When the members come together, each person is given space to share their experience with the Scripture. We learn to be “spiritual listeners” when each person talks – to really listen to the person talking and to listen to how God may be prompting us to respond to them.
WHY SHOULD I BE IN A HUDDLE?
We grow spiritually primarily through the experience of life in gospel community. Jesus’ life practices give us an excellent example for Huddles – he preached to the masses and lived life with the disciples, but He shared more intimately with a few.
WHY only 3 OR 4 PEOPLE IN A GROUP?
A group of 3 or 4 produces a unique dynamic that is big enough for burdens to be shared more evenly and more perspectives given. However, this number is also small enough for each person to contribute significantly to the group and discourages anyone from “hiding.” This number also keeps the group time from going on too long.
HOW WILL WE BE TRAINED FOR HUDDLES?
We will do a church-wide training on two Wednesday nights—August 14 and 21. You can sign up to attend a night of training HERE!
